Groendyke Transport is pleased to award Kaitlyn Heinz this year’s Jonathan Luevano Memorial Scholarship.
Why it matters: Kaitlyn receives $1,500 toward her fall tuition as a freshman at The College of New Jersey, where she plans to major in elementary education and psychology.
Kaitlyn rose to the top of scholarship applicants with a 4.3 weighted GPA, the quality of her essay, and a long list of extra-curricular activities, such as yearbook, SADD, women of the world, and hero clubs.
She is the daughter of Groendyke Operations Manager Chris Heinz.
Applications for the scholarship are reviewed and chosen anonymously by the scholarship committee.
The big picture: The scholarship, which was first awarded in 2016, is given each year to a dependent or grandchild of a Groendyke employee to help pay for their education. It honors the memory of Jonathan Luevano, a young driver at Groendyke’s Fort Worth, Texas, terminal who was shot and killed on May 7, 2015 while delivering fuel to a local convenience store.
What they’re saying: “It has been a great honor to award this scholarship in Jonathan’s memory, and it’s hard to believe this is its 10th anniversary,” said Groendyke CEO Greg Hodgen. “Kaitlyn’s scholarship is well-deserved, and we are proud to help her achieve her academic goals.”
