ENID, Okla. (April 12, 2019) — Groendyke Transport has won its record eighth National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) North American Safety Champion Award, also known as the Heil Trophy, the NTTC announced today. It’s the second time in three years Groendyke has won this award for the best overall safety record and program in the country.
Groendyke will receive its award during the NTTC’s upcoming 71st Annual Conference & Exhibits program April 23-25 at the Wynn Las Vegas. Heil Trailer International proudly sponsors the NTTC’s North American Safety Awards.
A top-five carrier by revenue in the tank truck industry, Groendyke won in the Harvison Division, for carriers with more than 15 million miles. To qualify to compete for this award, Groendyke also won its mileage category, 40 to 90 million miles. Tandet Logistics out of Oakville, Ontario, won the Sutherland Division (less than 15 million miles).
“It is a humbling and deeply gratifying experience to win our eighth Heil Trophy. This is the Super Bowl of the tank truck industry,” said Groendyke President Greg Hodgen. “It validates the hard work of our more than 1,500 employees to ensure the safety of our drivers, customers and the motoring public each and every day.”
Groendyke is a privately held, family-owned company that services 49 states, Canada and Mexico from its 42 terminals in 15 states. In 2018, Groendyke had an accident frequency of .462 DOT accidents per million miles to win its mileage class and the overall award for large carriers.
Groendyke has now won Heil Trophies for its safety efforts in 1973, 1975, 1990, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2016 and 2018. After Groendyke’s eight trophies, the nearest competitor has five all-time.
“Congratulations to both Groendyke and Tandet,” said NTTC Chairman John Whittington of Grammer Industries. “This year’s contest was particularly competitive across all mileage classes, so both carriers should be extremely proud of their companywide safety performance. With Heil’s continued support, we’re pleased to recognize these two carriers as best in class, which underscores the NTTC’s safety-based mission.”
